Homelab Hardware Kit Test Bench

đź•’ 2 min read (Quick)

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been testing a few lab setups & devices on my workbench area and thought to myself it would be cool to have a rack on or maybe mounted to that desk for devices and or projects Im working on at the moment

I was also recently doing some spring cleaning of old computer gear and came across an old wall mount rack I had that I thought, hey, this could be perfect! I used this way back when for 1 of the 1st need-based projects in my lab. (I’ll create a blog post about this project real soon as it was a contributing factor in me getting my 1st tech job in an MSP, so kinda cool)

This wall mount rack was perfect for what I needed, considering it’s only 6U, and it already had rubber feet mounted on it to sit on a table and not slide. I added 2x shelves, a patch panel, & PDU to it and had a pretty solid setup for what was needed.

I’m excited to start using this setup more. I want to potentially mount it at the bottom of the desk to clear the space on the top. For now, it’s fine there. This came out pretty good, and I’m happy. Just wanted to be able to organize things a bit better, and I do not have any room in my main rack for something like this.

Items I would like to add:

  • USB hub mounted to the side.
  • 2x JetKVM’s.
  • Install Proxmox VE on the Lenovo ThinkCentre PC for a few testing tools.
